The work force reported for the week ofApril 12-1u8 was down 3 percent when compared with the surve week in April 2008, the National Agricultural Statisticss Service Hawaii Field Office said Tuesday. Pineapple and sugarf cane workers totaled900 workers, down 22 percent from the same periosd a year ago as a resulf of layoffs at and on Maui Land & Pineapple laid off 204 workersd in July 2008, while Gay & Robinson, the private, family-owner company on Kauai, ended its sugard cane operations in September 2008.
Hawaii’s tota farm work force — whichy includes self-employed farm operators and unpaid workeres such as family members and others working 15 hoursz or more perweek — totaledr 10,300 workers for the survey week, down 1 percent from a year ago. The average wage paid to all hired workersd during the survey week was estimatedsat $13.36 per hour, 1 percentt higher from a year ago. Hawaii farmz employing one to nine workers paid an averagwof $10.97 per hour and the combined average wage for fielr and livestock workers was $10.
